From Rara Avis we drove further east to the Caribbean coast where we took an exciting trip on the Tortugero River to observe more wildlife. The Tortugero River is a series of canals linking coastal swamps. They were dug from 1966-1970 by logging interests. Our trip took 4 hours and went 50 miles upstream. It was very pleasant on the lancha, but very hot and sticky whenever we got off.
