This is one of the
green vipers at the Snake Temple in the south part of Penang Island. The
temple used to be in the midst of the jungle and the snakes came in on
their own - as disciples of the patron diety, Chor Soo Kong. The triangular
shape of the head indicates that it is poisonous. It is thought that the
thick smoke from the incense keeps them somewhat sedated. At night the
priests stuff the cracks around the doors with newspapers to keep them
inside.
