Mono Basin and Hot Creek Area

Sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata) is not well adapted to the salty soil right near Mono Lake. When the springs that created the tufa towers were flowing more they flushed the salt from the surrounding soil enough for the Big Sagebrush to become established. It's long taproot is able to reach the fresh groundwater below. Big Sagebrush and other Artemisia shrubs are the dominant plant species across large portions of the Great Basin.
