Mono Basin and Hot Creek Area

Before 1941, when the LA water diversion began, Mono Lake was much larger. The water is gone - but the once dissolved salts and carbonates remain in the old lake bed! Mono Lake has 10% salt, the Pacific Ocean has 3.5% and Lake Tahoe has .001% salt. Imagin how big this lake would be with a water level above all the tufa towers!
