Mono Basin and Hot Creek Area

During the summer the water in Mono Lake slowly turns from green to tropical blue because the trillions of brine shrimp graze on algae in the upper water column. They die and create biomass at the bottom of the lake. However in 2014, the lake did not turn blue. The brine shrimp did not die in July as usual although their numbers diminished by August but the lake stayed an opaque green as seen from satellite images. The brine shrimp didn't eat as much algae as usual - or maybe there was more algae because the water was warmer.
