The Inca Baths at Tambomachay near Cusco were built as a site for ritual bathing. Water, a basic element of life, was sacred along with the sun, lightening, thunder, mountains and rivers. The water comes from a natural spring and is channeled to several levels at the site. Extensive underground channels through mountains were often built to supply water, but the source of this spring in unknown.
