Rock Creek Area

The red cankers on this Quaking Aspen could have been caused by the Cytospora chrysosperma beetle or a relative (C. pluriannulata, C. cana). Quaking Aspen often propagates through its roots to form large groves based on a single rhizome. Aspens do produce seeds, but seldom grow from them. The quaking or trembling of the leaves that is referred to in the common name is due to its flexible flattened petioles.
