Rock Creek Area

This is an iconic and ancient Sierra Juniper (Junipera grandis) with protective fencing during the refurbishment of Rock Creek Road. These trees can live to be over 2,000 years old. "The top is almost always dead in old trees. Some are mere weathered stumps, decorated with a few leafy sprays, reminding one of the crumbling towers of some ancient castle" (Muir 1894). The new asphalt was only finished up from our campground almost to Mosquito Flat.
