Rock Creek Area

Whitebark Pines (Pinus albicaulis) are dependent on Clark's Nutcrackers to open the cones. The birds eat, store and cache thousands of the seeds. They can find quite a few of their caches, particularly in an emergency to feed their young. Cache sites selected by nutcrackers are often favorable for germination of seeds and survival of seedlings. Those caches not retrieved by the time snow melts contribute to forest regeneration.
