Rock Creek Area

Peirson's Brown Paintbrush (Castilleja peirsonii), like all Broomrapes is a root-parasite - its roots are modified into absorptive structures. The Jepson manual says the flowers are bright red and indeed most of the photos on line are red! It is other characteristics that distinguish it from other species in this genus. Example: the beak is strongly widened where the lower lip diverges from it.
