Rock Creek Area

Much of the bark on this Whitebark Pine (Pinus albicaulis) has been blasted off making it more vulnerable to infection by the mountain pine beetle. The number of Nutcrackers in the area is declining, due to a reduced number of cones available for them. It does not seem that fire suppression is a primary factor causing the decline of whitebark pine communities in the northern Sierra. The regeneration of Whitebarks is slowing noticeably, whatever the cause.
