Yosemite and Tioga Pass Area

Spatterdock (Nuphar polysepalum) floats delicately on Siesta Lake. The glossy, curled leaves provide shelter for fish. The waxy coating on the leaves makes them waterproof, so that the leaf can breathe through stomata on the top of the leaf. The flowers have bright yellow petal-like sepals. If you can get close enough to look inside of the sepals, you can see the red anthers, the true petals and maybe a yellow to green fruit beginning to develop.
