Yosemite and Tioga Pass Area

This ancient tree, a Sierra Juniper (Juniperus grandis) is full of balls of Mistletoe. Sierra Juniper has been used since historic times for firewood, charcoal, corrals, poles, and fence posts. The wood is extremely durable and resistant to rot, but it dulls saws since wind-blown sand particles adhere to its shaggy bark. It looks a lot like Bristlecone Pines and it turns out that the ancient individuals in the White Mountains may be hybrids of Sierra and Utah juniper.
