Yosemite and Tioga Pass Area

The glowing red tubular flowers of the Scarlet Penstemon (Penstemon rostriflorus) have a hooded upper lip with 2 lobes and a three-lobed lower lip and 5 stamens, one of which is infertile. The long narrow tube is shaped to attract hummingbirds, but not bees. Not only are they too narrow for bees, but they are pointed down and so do not have a landing platform. In fact the lower lip is curved under and considerably shorter than the upper lip.
