Yosemite and Tioga Pass Area

Sierra Junipers (Juniperus grandis) grow twisted & gnarled out of cracks in the granite. They have red ribbon-like bark and overlapping scales for leaves. Their blueberry-size cones smell like gin. They don't germinate well unless they pass through the digestive track of birds, such as the Townsend's solitaire. Most of the other trees are Lodgepole Pine, some are Western White Pine.
