Yosemite and Tioga Pass Area

After leaving Yosemite park, heading east, we started down the steep grade to Hwy 395 toward Lee Vining and Mono Lake. There is a 3,561' elevation loss in only 12 miles here! During the Ice Age the Lee Vining Glacier carved this canyon and emptied into Lake Russell - the much enlarged ice age version of Mono Lake. The glaciers of Sierras were up to 4,000' deep - real scouring power!
